P2P v. Financial Aid

The media (especially tech media and college newspapers) have been reporting a lot on a bill making its way through the U.S. House of Representatives that seeks to address peer-to-peer file sharing on college campuses. I'm not going to comment on the politics of it too much, but I want to mention it here because this legislation could have a significant impact on the way we manage our network and provide security. First, I have found a good overview of what is happening in an article on CNET.

The point I want to make is that Financial Aid to students is something so important that I don't think it should be even discussed as a way to pressure colleges to stop peer-to-peer file sharing. Regardless of your opinions on file sharing and responsibility for protecting copyrights, there are millions of student who rely on Federal Financial Aid in order to get a college education. Any action by Congress that jeopardizes this critical assistance will end up hurting individual students, and will cause the greatest damage to the poorest students. If you think Financial Aid is important, please call your Representative and encourage them to make sure Federal Aid is not jeopardized because of file sharing. If you don't know who your representative is, you can find them at Congress.org.
