Two Great Masters of Cinema Gone . . .
The Media Librarian doesn't know what to say about this double loss. Tributes to Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni are available from far more knowlegable sources.
These very different filmmakers shared two commitments: to exploring areas of inner life that film hadn't dealt with previously, and to the power of the visual image. The enduring significance of their work is the pictures they created: Bergman's world of winter light, Antonioni's lingering close-ups of Monica Vitti.
To those who don't understand what the fuss is about, please look at some of Bergman's and Antonioni's films in our collection. Go to our the web catalog, and search using Ingmar Bergman and/or Antonioni as key words. There was nothing like them before these giants began to work, and there's nothing like them today.
