Plenty of Pinter

If you're spending the summer in Boston, don't miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in the work of Harold Pinter, one of the Media Librarian's favorite writers. The American Repertory Theatre is performing a new production of his play No Man's Land, while the Harvard Film Archive is presenting a series highlighting Pinter's achievements as a screenwriter. Alas,
you have missed The Pumpkin Eater, which was shown May 13, but you can watch our video (V2359).

Media Services has many of the other films the Harvard Film Archive is showing:
The Homecoming(DVD 940) Peter Hall's film version of his original Royal Shakespeare Company production, starring Vivien Merchant, Pinter's wife at the time.
The Servant(V 153): one of the few instances of the movie being better than the book. Directed by Joseph Losey.
Accident (V 2420) Another Losey-Pinter collaboration, adapted, with key alterations, from the novel by Nicholas Mosley.
Betrayal (V 644) The film adaptation of Pinter's play about a love affair told in reverse.
The French Lieutenant's Woman(V 313) Incredibly clever adaptation by Pinter of John Fowles' novel, using two narratives featuring the same actors, but taking place in two centuries.

Unfortunately, we don't have The Last Tycoon or The Comfort of Strangers--you'll have to go to Harvard for those.
Best wishes for a Pinteresque summer!

Preview of the Week!

Our first Dejeuner au Cinema of the summer will be:
Thirst, a 62 minute documentary by Alan Sniton and Deborah Kaufman:
"Is water part of a shared "commons", a human right for all people? Or is it a commodity to be bought, sold, and traded in a global marketplace?"
Come for all, or part of the fun: in the conference room, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Summer movies . . .

All summer faculty, students, and staff are invited to weekly lunch-time screenings of new titles we are previewing for possible purchase. Bring your lunch to our air-conditioned conference room (third floor Ansin Building), sit back, and enjoy the show. The Media Librarian asks only that you complete a feedback form on the film you view.

First up in our May Matinee series (Media Librarian reserves right to change the name) is the documentary China Blue, which follows a pair of blue jeans from manufacture to sale, in the process introducing us to two teenaged factory workers.

Join us on Wednesday, May 9, at 12:30 p.m. We'll supply beverages!

May 1, 2007

It is over . . . for a little while.

This afternoon Media Services/Resources had our end of the year good-bye party for our work study staff. Upper Crust pizza, and the traditional raffle of junk from Maureen's office made it a festive affair, but of course, tinged with sadness. Five of our staff are graduating, including one of my special "Angels", Lauren: best wishes and thanks to you, and to Andrew, Alon, James, Cody. We'll miss you!

Though we complain endlessly about them (they're late, they're noisy, they're playing video games on company time!) we couldn't function without them. Thanks for a great year! Go forth and watch movies!
