New Copiers

new_copiers.jpgIn response to student requests for better copiers, three new copiers will be installed in the Library. Installation will take place on Monday, August 4. During this time photocopying will be unavailable. If you need to copy an item that may not leave the Library, please use the scanner opposite the Reference Desk. The Print/Copy Center, located in the lobby of the Little Building (80 Boylston Street) also provides copying service and self-serve copiers (Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.). We apologize for any inconvenience and are happy to provide you with better photocopiers.

Library Closed August 16 through September 1

The Library will be closed from August 16 through September 1 as we put the finishing touches on summer renovations aimed at expanding and improving library facilities and services. To return materials, please use the book drop located by the elevators outside of the Library entrance. Faculty members who wish to drop off Reserve materials should call Ian Thistle (617.824.8326) or the Circulation or Reference Desks.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Circulation Desk (617.824.8668) or the Reference Desk (617.824.8674). We will reopen at 8:45 on September 2 and look forward to sharing our enhanced space with you at that time.

Staff Picks - The Art of the American Snapshot, 1888-1978

Today's recommended book is The Art of the American Snapshot, 1888-1978. As I've said before, I like pretty pictures, and of course this book is full of them. The best part about this book is what makes it different from most other photography books: like the title says, these photos are snapshots. It's not full of artsy pictures from professional photographers, but instead it shows normal people taking pictures of themselves, their friends, and their families, just like everyone on Facebook and Flickr now. The chapters are broken down by decades, and you can see the cultures changing simply by looking back at these pictures. You'll see it in the clothes the people wear in the photos, and it's even as if you can see the attitudes changing as time progresses. Worth checking out for its cultural eyewitness factor and, of course, lots of pretty pictures.

Comment/Suggestion

I want to thank the Emerson Library for actually listening to comments and recommendations. But I wish there was a way for students to know what new books or magazines have been added weekly.

As you may have noticed, the Fenway Libraries Online catalog has changed, and the new catalog isn't quite yet fully functional. Within the next few weeks, a "New Books" feature will be added as a search option in the catalog. In the meantime, however, we have online exhibits of recently added titles on our Flickr page.
