Suggestion: You should allow students to reserve group study rooms online.

Response: Believe us when we say we'd LOVE for students to be able to book study rooms online. Unfortunately, our current booking system, EMS, can't make online reservations, but we're hoping that in the future this option might become available.

The stapler situation is ineffective this semester for two reasons: (1) there is no room to sort and staple where they are now (near printers); (2) there is usually a line of people waiting to print blocking the way to the staplers. Can we have a stapler in the computer lab/classroom? And could you put a flat table next to the printers for us to use to staple and sort pages? It would help a lot.

Response:
Thank you for your comment. Limitations of space and material are keenly felt by all. Unfortunately, complications related to the Pharos print management system make it impossible for print jobs to properly collate, necessitating manual sorting, and staplers are provided as an extra service. Please feel free to bring a personal stapler to the library or print in many of the various locations across campus. We will consider placing an extra regular stapler in the classroom. Thanks!

Many thanks to the wonderful Library staff during our capstone. We had a lot of specific research to do very quickly, and the reference librarians were invaluable to our success. Erica was especially helpful at the beginning (by the way - for future marketing students - geographical industry info. is available on the U.S. Census website - except for Mass.! I contacted them about it apparently Mass. is not part of some program), and Josh and Dan took a lot of time to help later on - we couldn't have done it without you!

Thanks, and have a great summer!

You're most welcome!

Double-sided printing!

Suggestion:
Double sided printing! Yay! Thank you!

Response:
It's our pleasure! Enjoy the extra $ savings (and the extra trees) to your heart's content. Thanks for your enthusiastic response! (Note: Next semester, double-sided printing will be the default.)

I think it's great that the media services catalogue of movies is now housed in the Library instead of Media Services. I'd like to suggest moving the dining hall menus from the dining hall to the Will & Grace set, just for fun.
Seriously. What?

Response:
Thanks for noticing that the Media Collection has moved from the Media Services Center to the Library, but do we detect a tone of dissatisfaction that indicates a misunderstanding. You see, the Media Collection has always been part of the Library collection. The problem was, you had to go somewhere else to use it! Now, if you're analyzing a film, and have questions about its production or marketing plan or want to see the screenplay . . . it's all here! So look at it this way: the media and the print resources are back together again, like they were meant to be--like Bogie and Bacall, like Spencer and Hepburn--like, well, Will and Grace!

I saw a cockroach in the library today. A big one. Not cool, man.

Response

Unfortunately, given the college's urban setting and the Library's food and drink policy, the intermittent presence of certain uninvited guests is inevitable.

I want to thank the Emerson Library for actually listening to comments and recommendations. But I wish there was a way for students to know what new books or magazines have been added weekly.

As you may have noticed, the Fenway Libraries Online catalog has changed, and the new catalog isn't quite yet fully functional. Within the next few weeks, a "New Books" feature will be added as a search option in the catalog. In the meantime, however, we have online exhibits of recently added titles on our Flickr page.

Question
There is never anyone at the reference desk in the morning. Today there was no doorbell.

Answer

Summer Reference Desk hours start at 9:30 with an "on call" staffing model until 11:00. This typically means that we leave a doorbell at the Reference Desk so you can summon help when you need it. If you need assistance before 9:30 or don't see the doorbell, please ask at the Circulation Desk. A staff member there can assist you or help locate a reference librarian.

Edit printer settings so that we can print double-sided.

The library’s printers are provided by and maintained by the Information Technology department. If you have any suggestions about printing, please let them know (http://dos.emerson.edu/external/feedback/).

The clock at the end of the study carols above the gray doors has not been set forward for Daylight Savings Time.

This is fixed. Thanks for letting us know!

This looks too much like a muggle library, and not enough like the libraries in Harry Potter. Please redecorate. :)

What a wonderful idea! Sometimes, it’s nice to know that your ideal library really exists. So, check out the Suzzalo Library reading room at the University of Washington. Rumor has it that UW students call it “The Harry Potter Room.” It’s worth a trip to Seattle! And, we’ll work on getting those vaulted ceilings here at Emerson.

You should have more GRE prep books available, particularly more updated ones as the test is in the process of changing. I need to borrow one, but can't get a hold on any copies to take out from either the FLO or BPL catalogs.

Thanks for the suggestion. The test prep books do get outdated quickly, so we'll order a few newer ones for the library collection. In the meantime, you may want to request one through interlibrary loan by filling out the form at http://www.emerson.edu/library/about/services/book-request-form.cfm.

I was incredibly frustrated/disappointed to see that there were no reference librarians to help me with a photocopier problem at 5:30 this evening. The sign on the reference desk says you are available until 6pm on Fridays and I had not witnessed anyone there the whole time I've been here. (since about 3pm).

We’re sorry that the sign had the incorrect hours. We’ve corrected it to show the hours for this semester:

Monday through Thursday from 9:30 am until 11:00 pm
Friday from 9:30 am until 5:00 pm
Saturday from noon until 6:00 pm
Sunday from noon until 9:00 pm.

The circulation desk is staffed all hours that the library is open, so please ask for help at the circulation desk when a librarian is not available. Again, sorry for the inconvenience.

Books on reserve should not be in teachers possession indefinitely. New Sudden Fiction is long overdue and I needed it to do my work

The book New Sudden Fiction is currently not on reserve, but in the regular circulating collection. Whoever does have it checked out was supposed to return it in early November. If this book should be on reserve for a class, you can tell your teacher to contact the library and have it placed there. You can also put the book on hold through the library catalog, so that when it is finally returned, you will get an email and it will be held for you at the circulation desk. Contact the circulation desk (x8668) for help with that.

Over the last month or so, a lot of the computers in the library classroom have been very sluggish and slow to load.

We're checking with IT about this issue. Please let us know if you continue to experience any problems.

Please update the library computers to Internet Explorer 7 or better yet Firefox (It's free).
The majority of the computers available within the library have Firefox: The twenty computers in the Library classroom have Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 (as well as Netscape Navigator and Opera). The four computers directly in front of the Reference Desk, the Adaptive Technology workstation, and the six laptops that you can check out at the Reserve Desk have Firefox. However, we suspect you're talking about the computers we refer to as Ref04 through Ref22, which have IE6. We are planning a new setup for those machines, which will include an upgrade to IE7, but it will take awhile.

Replace the photo-copiers. Or at least repair the card readers so they actually tell me my balance. It saddens me that this school so eager to flaunt its technological savvy has been so negligent of these copiers. Also, to suggest that I travel to the print and copy shop is irresponsible due to the restrictions on reserve materials. Kindly take all of my tuition and purchase a new copier. Or if that doesn't work what if the "million dollar Freston gift" I am forced to read about. Or perhaps that alleged $82 million endowment. Surely the funds could be found somewhere. Lastly, I will say that the most aggravating thing about the copiers is that they are, for me, the library's only short-coming. All the more reason to address this at once. Thank you for reading this.

The copiers are on a contract that runs through next summer. Next spring we will probably begin the process of putting out an RFP for copiers and service. We will take all the comments and complaints we get very seriously in evaluating the proposals from vendors.

The swipe-card readers are standardized throughout the campus labs and printing facilities and are maintained by IT. If you swipe your card at one of the print stations (not the copiers) it will tell you your total balance (ECcash plus print credits). If you have complaints about the card readers, you should address them to IT staff.
