A Family Affair

It brought some to tears. Barack Obama's half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng spoke on DNC kickoff night. Although she was there in support of her brother, most of her words centered on her late mother. Soetoro-Ng said Senator Obama's political success was a result of the lessons their mother had taught them as children, specifically his willingness to help others and his strength of self. She emphasized that her brother wanted all children to believe in their dreams and that that was one reason why he is the candidate of hope.

Soetoro-Ng is a U.S. history teacher who has worked in New York City and Hawaii public and charter schools.  She said she wants her students to dream bigger and have bountiful opportunities.  She credits her big brother Barack with helping her realize her dreams and being like her mother in opening worlds to her.
