Area Results: Chang-Diaz, Kerry, Shaheen Winners
After a scandalous end to her opponent's campaign, Sonia Chang-Diaz declared victory in the Second Suffolk District tonight. Incumbent state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson was forced to drop out of the race following an arrest on federal bribery charges.
On a less surprising note, incumbent Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry beat his Republican challenger to keep his seat for a fifth term. Counterterrorism expert Jeff Beatty posed little threat to the Democrat throughout the campaign season.
In New Hampshire, a long and bitter battle ended with Democrat Jeanne Shaheen defeating incumbent John Sununu for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Sununu's loss, in addition to Republican Elizabeth Dole's defeat in North Carolina, has resulted in a significant expansion for the Democrats in the Senate.
