Obama Keeps Himself Busy Kicking Off The Inauguration

By Cassidy Quinn Brettler -- 1/18/09

Washington may be freezing, but the Obama and Biden families have been keeping warm with a flurry of pre-Inauguration activities.

They started the morning going to church and then laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

Later both families attended the "We Are One" concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Ten-year old Malia Obama had her camera and was taking pictures of her parents and the performers.  The concert included many famous artists such as James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, and Stevie Wonder.

In the evening the Obamas went out on the town.  At the same time at least three balls were held including the African-American Church Inaugural ball at the Grand Hyatt Washington Hotel, the Latino Inaugural Gala at Union Station, and the Aloha Inaugural Ball at the Wardman Park Marriott Hotel.  It is still unknown what time the Obamas arrived home.

The Obamas are staying at Blair House where the Secret Service has been guarding the door.  Tonight there were no crowds around the building but only a small group of middle school students on a tour stopped by. Tuesday the Obamas and their children will officially move into the White House.
