 The Project for Excellence in Journalism has released its annual report on the state of the news media. Among the findings:

  • Audiences are turning to online and cable television for news.
  • The downturn in the economy has accelerated the decline of traditional media and increased the urgency for them to find a model that will support new ventures and focus less on maintaining the status quo.
Now that you've read the section about Online (you have, haven't you?), hit the comment link and list 2-3 things that jumped out at you in this report.

Example: I was struck by the discussion regarding the "news hole" with respect to election coverage. PEJ's assertion that other media devoted more space to election stories than online seems a little shaky. I'd like to know how they defined a "story" and how much of a site they included in their analysis.

For instance, if you base this strictly on cnn.com's homepage, it may appear that they're only running a few stories. However, if you factor in cnn.com/politics and "alternative" story forms such as interactive graphics, doesn't that increase their election news hole?

In this day and age, it seems a little short-sited (no pun intended) to base analysis on a homepage when many users come into a site via various urls. I rarely see CNN's homepage. I usually enter through a "/something" or other.

Newsu Course "Reporting Across Platforms"
Go to newsu.org and sign up for an account if you don't already have one. Log in, enroll in the course and complete it. This will give you some ideas and an overview of how to structure a piece for online.
