It's More than Just a Game

Sitting in the middle of a standing ovation of Brown fans, most of whom donned T-Shirts with the slogan "Brown State" on the front, I sat down in disbelief and shock and was for the first time in 61 minutes of play, silent. Today, there was no way to break free from my emotions toward the team that lined up before a roaring crowd after taking the NCAA champions of just two short years ago into overtime at Homewood Field.

Maybe it's influenced by so many Lars Tiffany speeches, but I can't help but give a philosophical outlook on the Brown Bears Lacrosse team after the past three months.

Four seasons ago, the Brown Bears finished the 2006 season with a 2-11 record. There were no expectations for what was to come, but when Tiffany entered the picture, there was certainly a sense of hope amongst the Bears. And today, that hope and belief and faith was felt among every single Brown supporter. Sitting in front of members of the 1971 team that beat Hopkins so long ago, I listened as former players talked about their glory days at Brown and gave a play-by-play record of the game as the minutes wore on. The alumni, who traveled to Homewood Field in Baltimore to support players they hardly know, came with enough cheers to sing a different one at every TV timeout. As the parents and current fans sat clinching their teeth with a 3-0 score early in the game, the alumni stood proud and cheered louder for the team that they knew would succeed today.

And that they did. While it wasn't the outcome any Brown fan wanted today, it is yet another step toward gaining the national respect for a Team that has defied all odds.

Tied 7-7 to begin the final quarter, the Bears came out ready for yet another battle. Minutes later, the Blue Jays got on the board with three unanswered goals, running away with it as though the victory was already theirs. But for the second time in the game, the Bears came back from three goals behind. They answered with Andrew Feinberg's second goal of the game off of an assist by Collins Carey who seemed to shock the entire Blue Jay squad as he came out of nowhere at the end of the third quarter with a shot to tie things up at 7-7. The Bears knew their fight was still just beginning as the Blue Jays answered two minutes later with a goal by Brian Christopher with just under eight minutes left to play.

Down 11-8, the momentum was still with the Bears as Charlie Kenny won another face-off to gain possession on the field. As usual, Thomas Muldoon showed unyielding determination to get another goal, scoring two unassisted and unanswered goals for the Bears to trail 11-10 with 2:46 to play.

Then, as the Blue Jays did all they could to maintain possession for the remaining minutes to edge past the Bears, an outstanding effort by the Brown defense proved too much to beat. In a double-team play assisted by goalie and Ivy League Player of the Year Jordan Burke, a startled Blue Jay offense was shut down as the Bears forced them to move the ball. Burke reacted quickly for his second interception of the game to keep the ball in motion toward the Blue Jays' net. Frankly, the following seconds were a blur as I jumped up and down with excitement and sickness as one of the Bears long-poles took the ball up the field and got it off to an attackman for the play of the century. With the Blue Jays scrapping their way through the Brown offense, Kyle Hollingsworth was determined to do whatever it took to get the ball in the back of that net. Falling to the ground after being hit from all sides, Hollingsworth took to his athleticism in what was essentially a hockey shot as the crowd watched in astonishment as the ball hit the back of the net with just :08 left on the clock.

It was everything you would have expected from Hollingsworth and the Bears if you have been following their team through the season. They have had to work for every little victory they have gotten and have conquered any speculations that they have merely gotten "lucky" against some big teams like Cornell. The moment after Hollingsworth's goal will go down in history as one of the best moments for the program, if you ask me, which you probably won't. Regardless, the play stopped the Blue Jays and their fans in their tracks. As the BRUNO side went nuts with applause, the Hopkins fans were silent. I looked on as members of the band stopped preparing for the victory song that they have played so many times at Homewood field.

As for the final minute of the game in overtime, we all know what happened. Blue Jay Brian Christopher, who has scored the winning goal in overtime three times in the last four games, got on the board with a sniper goal from what seemed like six yards away just :38 into play.

But this game was about so much more than the score. You can shoulda, coulda, woulda all day long, but at the end of it all, the Bears have still proven themselves to a nation of skeptical teams and even more skeptical media.

But don't think the Bears have had their last say. Next year, the Bears will remember this day and as always, will come back with a vengeance. Returning for the Bears will be some of the best talent on the field today. First-Team All-Ivy Peter Fallon intercepted at least two or three Hopkins passes and picked up six ground balls, Jake Hardy got into the mix with two groundballs, both of which were after a shuffle that could have ended with possession on either end, while long-pole Jake Westermann will also be back for the Bears next year. Charlie Kenney, who went 11-for-21 on face-offs, most of which happened all in a row in the second half as the Bears made their way back, will be back with Matt Greenberg, who beat players to the ball and hustled like never before. On the other end, First-Team All-Ivy Thomas Muldoon got four goals and picked up five ground balls playing with heart as always alongside Second-Team All-Ivy selection Andrew Feinberg who got two goals. Also back for the Bears will be first-year Rob Schlesinger who has made his mark on the season as one of the hardest workers on the field coming out of high school as an attackman now playing D-middie for the Bears and putting up a goal or two every now and then when the opponents least expect it. Collins Carey and Jimmy Wittpenn will also be forces to be reckoned with in 2010 as they have shown some of the greatest improvements on the field this year. Fortunately for the Bears as well, Reade Seligman will be back for more for his final year. And you never know what kind of talent has been waiting in the wings.

Brown State will be back in 2010. See you then.

Another shot to end on a high note

Writing this after the NCAA bracket announcement makes Saturday's loss a little less painful from the standpoint that the Bears still get another shot! For the Bears, I think this loss was yet another wake up call and my projections for the battle against Hopkins is a positive one. I have no doubt in my mind that the Bears will bounce back and remind themselves and the rest of the nation that there is always room to bounce back and that given the opportunity, these guys can surely hang with the best. To beat Hopkins would make history and to do it on their home turf in the seniors' last season would make it all the more sweet. But, we'll look to that later. For now, it's my duty to give a rundown of the events that ensued Saturday afternoon in Princeton, NJ.

I'd like to note also that never will I ever again agree to go behind the camera in a game that is packed with so much emotion from all angles. As an unpaid intern, I think I have more than fulfilled my duties and to have to look through the screen and zoom in on Princeton's goal celebrations seven times in a row was enough to make me wanna break the tapes and never post the video on line. Nonetheless, I did it and as we speak the "highlights" are being editted for laxunited. But now for the game...

It was a dreary day in Princeton as the Bears sought for a repeat of last year's victory over the Tigers that led to their share of the Ivy trophy. Instead, the scene was much different and for the Tigers, their perfect performances at home have remained so as they took their own turn at the title after a perfect quarter that proved to be too perfect for the Bears to rebound from.

The opened up with two teams battling it out to make something happen. Instead, nothing did. With one shot apiece from both ends, the mood calmed as the first 15 minutes wound down. Then, the Tigers came out with a vengeance.

Throughout the second quarter, shot after shot, the Tigers ran past the Bears eventually leading 7-0 to go into the half. Six different Princeton players got on the beard with the seven goals including their leading scorer, Tommy Davis with one, Mark Kovler also with one and sophomore Jack McBride with two back-to-back goals.

The second half opened up with a face-off win by Brown's Joel Tracy who go the ball out to senior Jack Walsh for the pick up. Despite Brown's possession, a shot by Walsh was saved by first-year Princeton goalie Tyler Fiorito for the possession that led to another Davis goal just 1:18 into play.

Trailing 8-1, the teams rallied for four minutes before junior Thomas Muldoon took his chance on a man-up opportunity for his 30th goal of the season at 9:47 to close the gap by one. Muldoon got on the board again three minutes later off of an assist by Walsh for a 8-2 score. After the Tigers answered again with another tally by Greg Seaman, who also offered the first goal of the day, the Bears scored three unanswered goals and things were looking up again.

Feinberg and Williams got on the board in the streak that ended with another man-up goal by Muldoon to put the score at 9-5. With 10:28 to go, Brown needed to hold off the Tigers from any more goals and get five more on the board. It was still reachable. But before they knew it, the McBride cousins of Princeton collaborated in a pretty play when Jack assisted Chris in his first and only goal of the game. Nic Bell would get on the board to make it 10-6 with 7:54 to play but with four missed shots including a hit pipe by Reade Seligman, who tallied three assists on the day, the time ticked away as the Tigers managed to squeeze in another goal with just under five minutes left to play.

In the final quarter, the Bears took 21 shots but as the day wore on it became more and more obvious that the Tiger defense would do whatever it took to keep the Brown offense at bay. From the first whistle to the last, it seemed that the Tigers' defensive unit was the deciding factor in the victory in addition to that commanding lead that made a Bear rebound all the more difficult. Despite a rough second quarter for the Brown defense, they had their moments as Matt Greenberg came up with some key ground balls and caused some big turnovers and goalie Jordan Burke stopped nine shots on the day to match Fiorito.

Feinberg would get the final goal of the game to close the gap to 11-7 Princeton. Despite the loss, the Bears got the good news that their season is yet to be over. For the first time, each of the Bears will get a chance to play in the NCAA tournament and prove that they can hang with the best.

Again, the Bears have all the tools they need to push past the Blue Jays of Hopkins. From my standpoint, the key will be to reclaim control over their own style of that play they exuded against Cornell. Throughout the season, the Bears have had some of their best games following a loss including one of the best games of the season against Harvard after the tough loss to Penn.

Going into the game, the Hop is 9-4 also with a loss to Princeton and a huge reputation to defend. The Bears on the other hand, have nothing to lose and everything to gain from a win against the Blue Jays. Like I've said before, never underestimate the underdog.

With a week of practice to prepare, there is no telling what the Bears will come out with Saturday at Homewood Field. The game will be aired live on ESPN2 beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday.

Never Underestimate the "Underdog"...Brown 11, Cornell 9

The #13 Bears took down the #3 Big
Red of Cornell. The question remains...If the Brown Bears don't deserve some
respect now... I don't know who does. Revenge? Maybe. Proof that the Bears
deserve some recognition as a powerhouse? Definitely.

This one is long, but if you make it to the end, you'll hopefully see why.

Last year, the Bears and the Big Red
shared the Ivy League title, but when it came down to who got the tournament
bid, it was the Big Red who defeated the Bears in the head-to-head matchup. Not
one of the Bears on the field today has ever tasted a victory over Cornell,
with the Bears' last win over the Big Red in a 2002 overtime match. But today,
things were different.

In 60 minutes of cut-throat passion,
skill and drive, the Brown Bears and the Big Red of Cornell duked it out in one of the most exciting games I've seen. Growing up watching some of
the best college lacrosse, I've yet to see many games that compare to what I
just saw today.

It started off with a win by Brown
face-off guy Joel Tracy as possession ping-ponged with two jittery teams that
were itching to get the first goal. The first 5 minutes changed possessions
with stripped balls, sloppy turnovers but a drive from both sides that let you
know this was gonna be a fun game. Then with a Cornell possession, George
Calvert found an open spot stick-side high on Burke for a quick goal that put
the Big Red up by one with just under 10 minutes to go.

The Bears were ready for the
challenge, regaining possession and taking a few missed shots. Then, the
recently silent threat from behind, Kyle Hollingsworth reminded the Big Red
that they weren't invincible. Coming from behind the crease, Hollingsworth got
a lefty high-to-low goal on Jake Myers. Then in a man-up situation thirty
seconds later, Muldoon found Feinberg for his first goal and the first of three
times Feinberg would give the Bears the lead.

Then it was Cornell's turn to remind
the Bears that they're ranked up high for a reason. Pierce Dierkac got on the
board before John Glynn scored his sole point of the day. Glynn just above .500
at the X with 11-of-20 face-off wins. The face-off battle proved to be one of
the deciding factors of the game as the Bears took advantage of 10-of-24
face-offs, which Coach Tiffany pointed out isn't typical for his squad.

Hollingsworth tied things back up at
3-3 before the Big Red got back on the board with two more back-to-back goals
by Rob Pannell and Ryan Hurley. Keeping the Bears defense on their toes all
game long, Cornell peppered Jordan Burke and the Bears' defense with 45 shots
throughout the game. Muldoon kept things interesting with an unassisted goal
with 6:49 to play in the first half to make it 5-4. The Bears wouldn't be able
to make it even before the time ran out, but with a huge save by Burke in the
last second, the Big Red advantage wouldn't be more than one.

Words can't describe the rough and
outstanding play by both defensive units on the field. For the Bears, they
almost shutout Max Seibald and John Glynn who were both held to one goal apiece.
The Bears picked up 30 ground balls, including six from an outstanding effort
by Ryan Cassil. Midfielder Jack Walsh was, as always, all over the place on the
field also picking up a total of six ground balls.

Muldoon and the Bears came out on
fire again scoring just over three minutes into the second half. As the Bears
passed around the perimeter, Muldoon took his opportunity when he could with a
sniper lefty goal that went top shelf. The Bears were even again before Pannell
from Cornell got another tally of the day.

Then came my Play of the Game #1.
After a messy shuffle behind the Bears' goal, Ryan Cassil swooped in for a
ground ball launching it to Jake Hardy down the field. The fast break kept its
momentum as Hardy got the ball off to Feinberg for a quick pass to
Hollingsworth for the goal. With the score, Hollingsworth got a hat trick
and tied it up for the second time for the Bears. Feinberg got on the board
again with 1:16 left in the third as he came around the goal's left side and
fired it past Myers before he could react.

Then, the man held quiet for much of
the game, Max Seibald got on the board after Pannell saw him from down the field,
launching the ball to where Seibald was ready to strike on the crease. He
offered a quick fake before firing high on Burke for 7-7 tie to close out the
quarter.

Feinberg opened up the fourth in a
man-up goal for a hat trick off a feed from Seligmann. The efforts by the Bears
all over the field in the final quarter were outstanding. After Feinberg's
goal, Rocco Romero got his second point of the day with an unassisted mark to
tie it up at 8-8. From there, the Bears dominated despite tons of pressure from
the Cornell defense. Seligmann broke the tie after a pass from Hollingsworth
before my Play of the Game #2. Rob Schlesinger came onto the field at
full speed when his defender slipped out for a sub as Feinberg saw his open at
the top. First-year Schlesinger caught to pass and fired it low for the
game-winning goal to make it 10-8 Bears.

Cornell took 17 shots in the final
quarter as my Player of the Game, Jordan Burke put up his biggest
numbers of the game with 7 saves. Burke's efforts in the final quarter
and the defensive unit as a whole gave the offense those needed opportunities
in the final mintues.

When I thought the plays couldn't get
much messier, the Big Red was determined to regain possession with 3:58 to play
after Schlesinger's goal. With Myers out playing D and the Big Red double
teaming the offensive unit, Bears were falling at the touch of the ball. With
three men down, literally, and Myers out of the goal, Brady Williams caught a
pass on the right and fired into the empty net to secure the victory for the
Bears 11-8 with :53 seconds to play. The Big Red still wouldn't go down without
a fight as Derkac struck low on Burke for a final goal of the game to finish
the game 11-9.

So yeah, it was an awesome game, but
what does this all mean for the tournament? Potentially, a lot. For one, the
Big Red can no longer win the Ivy League title outright as they have one Ivy
loss along with Brown and Princeton. However, they're win over Princeton could
give them the automatic qualifier for the NCAA if Brown falls to them next
week. But for now, let's let the Bears revel in their victory and prepare for
next week.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;

Two to go... Brown 10, Providence 6

Amidst the not-so-steady and ever frustrating drizzle that New England does best, the Bears escaped with another win against Providence to advance to 11-2 going into Cornell Saturday. While it may not have been pretty for either team, both squads put up a good fight.

Despite an obnoxious fan that decided it was necessary to shake a tub of concrete pieces to distract the Brown defense, the Bears were able to hold off the Friars in the first half. And with the help of Mr. and Mrs. Cassil, the grown man was intimidated into ceasing his disruptions before the Friars could do any real harm.

Overall, it was another huge game for Thomas Muldoon who ended with four goals on the night. My choice for Player of the Game (and WEEK I might add after he scored two goals and dished out three assists in the Harvard win Wednesday) scored early and often throughout the match tallying the first goal of the night just 1:14 seconds into play. Muldoon carried the ball and juked his defender for what looked like it would be a riser but stunned goalie Robert Bryans when it stayed low and went directly to the back of the net. Feinberg struck next a couple minutes later off a feed from Brady Williams who picked up a ground ball for a quick pass and shot.

Next came two answer goals from the Friars beginning with Mike Feldberg. The next was another unassisted mark by Friar threat Colin Tigh who came out with a standout performance showing up all over the field for Providence. Along with his first goal, Tigh went 10-of-15 at the face off X and recorded three goals off of a mere five shots. Tigh's speed, agility and quick reflexes made him a threat on every end of the turf.

Tied at 2-2, it was all about the Bears in the second quarter with five unanswered goals to make it 7-2 at the half. The defense anchored a solid effort to keep the Friars scoreless in the second going 4-4 on clears, ending with an almost perfect clearing percentage by the end of the game, succeeding on all but one clear. Burke, who was just named a finalist in the Tewaaraton nominations, made three of his nine saves of the game in the quarter as well. The Bears also picked up 10 ground balls in the second quarter and went 4-for-6 on face-off attempts.

As for the offensive unit...

Brady Williams got on the board just seconds into the quarter in a play that started with a pass from Reade Seligmann whose name was once again botched by the announcers who continue to pronounce his name SEAL-igman much to the dismay of Brown fans. Then it was two back-to-back goals by Muldoon who got a pass from Seligmann on the crease and took the extra second for another fake and dodge before firing it on net.

Then came my Play of the Game. Attacking against a Friar zone defense, Brady Williams caught a pass from Feinberg up top and made an instant switch to his left to make his defender lunge before switching back to his right as his defender fell to the ground. Williams took advantage of the opportunity with a quick riser goal to clinch what would prove to be the game-winning goal for the Bears before the break.

The third quarter was a quiet one for the Bears as the Friars kept things going scoring four goals. The second Friar goal came from Tigh who won the face-off and took the ball down at full speed leaving the Bears on their heels for a second too long to make it 8-4. Bobby Labadini struck next for the Friars before another tally by Tigh to threaten the Bears with an 8-6 score going into the fourth. The Bears answered quickly with two goals in the fourth period including a third for Williams and a third for Feinberg to give them both hat tricks on the night.

The Bears will take the momentum into this week when they prepare for the long-awaited battle again Cornell this Saturday at Stevenson Field at 1 p.m. The Bears are still in the running for the Ivy Title and a shot at the NCAA tournament as they look forward to this weekend followed by their final regular season match up against Princeton.

The Friars fall to 6-7 overall with the loss.

Bears Rebound with Harvard win

It was thrilling. It was nerve-wracking. And at times it was infuriating. But the Brown Bears 8-6 victory of the Harvard Crimson could prove to be just what they need to clinch their second Ivy League title.

With two of their biggest games left to play against #4 Cornell and #1 Princeton, the Bears still have a ways to go before they can really relax. But with this win, they've ensured that the Crimson are no longer in the running for the title. And in the Ivy league, every little step counts.

The scene was set for a battle as the crowd's cheers echoed within the concrete, colosieum-style venue at Harvard Stadium. The night game that has been a tradition between the Ivy League pair lived up to its expectations as one of the most exciting games of the season.

Harvard opened things up with an early goal just 1:32 into play with an unassisted mark by Crimson's Dean Gibbons. The Bears didn't let the lead last long when Thomas Muldoon kicked off a three-goal streak for the Bears. Muldoon, who was held scoreless for the first time this season against Penn Saturday, got back on the board in a big way with two goals and three assists on the night. After a couple of missed shots, Muldoon found just enough space between the pipe and Harvard goalie Joe Pike for a lefty goal he fired in at 3:49 into the game. Andrew Feinberg and Brady Williams, Brown's usual threats on the attacking end, came out on fire as well tallying a goal apiece before the first quarter was over. Feinburg, who still commands the lead in Brown scoring, reached his 30th goal of the season with the point.

The Crimson closed the gap a little halfway through the second quarter with another goal from Gibbons who tallied his 19th goal of the season to put the score at 3-2.

Then came my play of the game. While fans didn't have a good angle to see the next Brown goal, on LaxUnited.com Highlights you will see one of Brown's prettiest plays of the year. Muldoon got the ball off a pass from Hollingsworth on the right side and ran it behind the net around the crease. As two Crimson defenders collapsed on Muldoon, trusty Feinberg rolled out in front of the net to catch a quick behind-the-back pass from Muldoon for a quick-stick goal on Pike. The Bears confidence was officially back.

Harvard rounded out the scoring in the half with an unassisted goal from Max Motschwiller to go into the half with a Brown lead 4-3. The second half began with another strong run by the Bears and the goal that would prove to be the game-winner by Reade Seligman just 4:06 into the third. Before that were two goals from Brown, including Feinberg's third of the game and a low, ground-skimming sniper from my player of the game, Charlie Kenney.

Kenney made huge things happen for the Bears throughout the game including contributions to the face-off wins where he won all nine of the Bears' 17 faec-off attempts. Kenney himself went 9-for-13 at the face-off X. Kenney scored on one of just two shots and also picked up six ground balls for the Bears.

Harvard again closed the scoring gap with three unanswered goals. The first came from Jason Duboe to end the Brown streak with just 1:15 left in the third. In the final quarter, Jeff Cohen came out strong for the Crimson and fired in his first of the game 1:10 into play. He struck again over two minutes later to clinch his 20th goal of the season in a man-up opportunity off of a pass from Jesse Fehr.

Both goalies had their best performances in the final period with Joe Pike recording five of his 10 saved and Brown goalie Jordan Burke recording four of his 12 total. Burke picked up two ground balls and played steady in goal throughout the entire game. In front of Burke, defender Peter Fallon picked up four ground balls and joined the rest of the defense in a stellar performance. Muldoon finished things off for the Bears to give a little more room in the victory with another unassisted goal with just over four minutes left to play.

The Bears advance to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in the Ivy League. They get an Ivy League break this weekend before facing off against Cornell next Saturday at home.

The Crimson fall to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the Ivy League. They will host Holy Cross this Saturday before rounding out their Ivy League schedule against Yale and Dartmouth in the next two weeks.

Bears Host Youth Clinic

Following a 13-9 Ivy League thriller against Yale last Saturday, the Brown Men's Lacrosse team took time out for a youth lacrosse clinic.
On the field with more than 20 future lacrosse stars between the ages of 8-12,
the Bears taught shooting, defensive positioning and even took time to sign
autographs and give away their old sticks.

For the Bears, reaching out to the youth is nothing
new. One of Brown's primary community service projects is a partnership with
the Brown/Fox Point Early Education Center where they spend time with young
students in the classroom.

"I really liked the clinic because its always nice
to give back to the community and it's great to help kids get better at the
sport that I love," said sophomore and Brown leading scorer Andrew Feinberg. "I
feel like the kids were really interested to what the Brown Lacrosse players
had to say and attempted to fix the mistakes that we were trying to correct."

Despite the blustery weather, the turnout was even
better than expected. After getting warmed up with passing and shooting, the
youth and the Brown players came together for a welcoming by Brown Assistant
Coach David Evans. Then, they broke up by positions with attack, midfield,
defense and goalies.

The attackmen worked on shooting and dodging from
behind, the midfielders worked on shooting from up top and dodging down the
sides for a shot and the defense worked on proper positioning. According to
Feinberg, reaching out to the youth is also a way to improve the sport as a
whole.

"It's always nice teaching younger kids how to play
lacrosse because it's nice to think that their generation might be able to
change the sport of lacrosse and make it bigger," said Feinberg.

The clinic was not all about basic drills and
technique. The Bears found ways to make the game exciting for the young
players.

"Thomas Muldoon actually did a really fun drill
where the attackmen had to make a diving shot," said goal

ie Jordan Burke. "They loved it."

Burke joined fellow goaltenders Matt Chriss and
Noah Beattie in instructing just the goalies. Fortunately for the youth, there
were only two of them.

"They got to have a lot of attention, which they
seemed to love," said Burke. "We warmed them up, worked on their stance,
positioning and technique."

Senior Brady Williams said that he understands the
impact such clinics can have on kids from personal experience.

"I remember being a kid at clinics and watching
college lacrosse games and being so excited to meet and work with some current
college players," said senior Brady Williams. "I have had a wonderful
experience at Brown and am happy to give back and help some of the local kids
who want to play lacrosse."

Williams added that participating in a sport is
about more than just improving your athletic skills.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;mso-pagination:

it's a great way for kids to learn social skills that
will ultimately translate to everyday life," said Williams. "Values
such as teamwork, commitment
and sportsmanship are qualities that are evident in the
social world."

Weather the Storm

As the clock ticked away, so did the opportunities for the Brown Bears in Saturday's 7-6 loss to Ivy League rival Penn. After taking second-ranked Princeton University into overtime last week, Penn took advantage of thier greatest threat. Possession.

Winning 11-of-16 face-offs, Penn had the advantage when they needed it most. Despite a weaker outcome at the face-off X, the Bears dominated on groundballs with 27 compared to Penn's 20. But that wouldn't be enough to get ahead in the muddy, rainy and windy conditions on Stevenson Field.

Prior to the game's start, technical difficulties urged one fan to begin the singing of the National Anthem and within the first verse, the entire crowd and the players on each team came together in honoring our country. That unity would only last a few seconds before the battle began.

Penn opened up the game with a goal by sophomore Morgan Griff before Brown answered with two goals, one by sophomore Andrew Feinberg who then dished out an assist to senior Brady Williams for a pretty shot giving Brown the 2-1 lead. The next two goals would be Penn's before embarking on a scoreless second quarter. Griff posted the final goal of the quarter in the final second of play to make it 3-2.

With Penn holding the ball much of the second quarter, they fired 9 shots, six on cage to Brown goalie Jordan Burke, who ended with 15 saves. Brown was able to get a hold of the ball for some of the second quarter, taking just six shots and posting no goals. Amidst the worsening weather, neither team could capitalize on their possessions going into the half at a low score of 3-2.

The third quarter saw both teams rally for the lead. Senior Alex Weber, who posted his second of the day, fired one past Burke just 1:07 into the second half. The two-point lead lasted only 17 seconds before Brown's Kyle Hollingsworth got on the board with a goal. The Quakers led 5-3 going into the final quarter that showed a promising start for the Bears.

After another mark by Hollingsworth, Williams caught a pass from Collins Carey to tie things up at 5-5. Unfortunately for the Bears, the next face-off would go to Penn as they seemed to regain control of the game. Penn rallied past the Bears with back-to-back goals by Weber and Drew Collins to make it 7-5 with just six minutes to play.

The Bears never gave up and after Penn held the ball for almost four minutes, the Bears broke up the play to regain possession and were fired up after a goal from Reade Seligmann. After a timeout, the Bears had 20 seconds to tie things up but as the clock ran out, the Quakers rushed the field to celebrate the victory.

With the win, the Quakers end with a 2-4 record in the Ivy League.

The Bears ended their eight-game winning streak and fall to 9-2 overall, 2-1 in the Ivy League.
No such thing as a sure thing....Brown 13, Yale 9

It was a close rally between the no. 12 Brown Bears and the Yale Bulldogs Saturday in a 13-9 Ivy League duel. Both teams came out strong on a windy and cold April day at Brown's Meister-Kavan Stadium in Providence. Before a tense crowd, the two teams battled it out for an ever important league win. With four teams in the top 15 from the Ivies, every game is huge for these teams and now is the time to get the win, no matter how you do it.

Frankly, it was anybody's game, which is often the case in Ivy League play. For Yale, there is no question that they had prepared hard for the game against the reigning Ivy League Co-Champs. They were ready to stop plays from happening and slow down the attacking Bears. Above all, they were ready to get the possession and run with it. Beginning at the midfield, the Ivy's top-ranked face-off specialist Kevin Discepolo earned 18-of-24 face-off possessions giving the Bulldogs the advantage of well, the ball, for much of the game. From the sidelines, Yale's speed and quickness also stood out. When they capitalized on a ground ball, they made the most of it, often by flying down to the other side of the field beating defenders for a quick play, a quick shot, and at times, a quick goal.

But, there is no denying the might of Brown's squad. The Bears made an impressive effort in the midfield and as the game went on, the Bears found the heart and the drive they have played with all season. After a quick run by Yale that evened things up at 3-3 in the second quarter, Brown fired back with two goals in just 14 seconds by first-year Rob Schlesinger and senior Kyle Hollingsworth to make it 5-3 with 7:49 left. The crowd was roaring on both ends and while Brown fans may have thought that was the end of their worries for the Bears, they were wrong.

Instead, Hollingsworth's goal would be the last from Brown for the half. Over the following minutes, Yale rallied past the Bears with four unanswered goals, two in the final 51 seconds to end the half with a 7-5 lead. Senior standout Mike Karwoski got one in for the Bulldogs in the second quarter as the Bears defense held him to just two goals on the day. The third quarter showed promise from both sides as each team put up two goals apiece, but the real shift in momentum came from the Bears at the onset of the final quarter.

The Brown defensive unit offered a promising performance in the final quarter in front of All-American goalie Jordan Burke. Burke who ended with 15 saves on the day was faced with just three shots in the final quarter as defensemen Peter Fallon, Ryan Cassil and Jake Westermann stepped up to deny the Bulldogs. But it was on the attack that onlookers could see a definite change of pace. The Bears were back and ready to prove their worth. After an unassisted mark by junior Collins Carey who is back after an injury, sophomore and team scoring leader Andrew Feinberg fired in another goal for the Bears off of an assist by Hollingsworth to tie things up at 9-9. Senior Jack Walsh then scored what would prove to be the game-winner off of an assist from classmate Brady Williams with 7:42 left to play. The Bears added three more goals to the score for a 13-9 victory over Yale to keep up hope to stay undefeated in the Ivy League.

Brown advances to 9-1 for the first time since 1991 when the Bears finished 13-1 overall. The Bear's look to extend their lead Saturday when they host Penn at 1:00 p.m.

Yale falls to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the Ivy League with the loss. The Bulldogs are set to face Albany at home Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

Brown 13, Delaware 5

I know I said I was going to do an update on both games now, but I lied. I'm doing a write-up for the Delaware and I'll let pictures speak for themselves for Dartmouth. I also did video so it's gonna take a while to get that uploaded. For now, entertain yourself by reading about the Delaware game and hopefully in a few days you'll get Dartmouth material.

So, Delaware game. If you look back, there was only one thing I was remotely worried about early on in the season for Brown and that was quick execution of goals. Not anymore. They completely redeemed themselves and showed more promise than ever during Saturday's match against the Blue Hens. With the win, the no. 11 Bears advance to a 7-1 record, the best start since 2004 when they also opened at 7-1.

The scoring started off just 39 seconds into play with a shot by defenseman Jake Hardy that led to a roar from packed stands. From then on, the Bears put on a show of accuracy, intensity and a never say die type of play. Over the following minutes, sophomore Andrew Feinburg tallied his first of the day before a beautiful unassisted lefty shot from around the crease by Reade Seligman to put the Bears at 3-0 after the first.

Delaware's Martin Cahill got his first and only goal of the day in the second quarter off of an

assist by Josh Coveleski to advance to 4-1 after another Brown goal by Thomas Muldoon. Delaware rounded out their scoring in the second quarter with another by Mark Steverson and a third by Kevin Kaminski with just 12 seconds left in the half. The Bears, however, dominated the second quarter with goals by senior Nic Bell, a man-up goal by senior Kyle Hollingsworth and another by both Feinberg and Muldoon.

Despite a broken stick, goalkeeper Jordan Burke held off the Blue Hens to no goals in the third quarter as the attack continued the push with two goals by Muldoon. Then came the Play of the Game.

Off of a clear from Burke, Jeff Foote carried the ball down the field with a pass to Hollingsworth behind the net. Amidst a sea of Blue Hen defenseman in front of the cage, Hollingsworth found Williams who snagged his first of the day with just 10 seconds left in the third quarter.

Moments later, the Goal of Game was scored by senior Jack Walsh who hustled the entire game popping up in what seemed like every play for the Bears. Walsh's unassisted mark came off a 1v1 in front of the cage when Walsh dodged before finding the perfect angle for a behind-the-back stick-side high shot to make the score 12-3 in the fourth.

The Bears finished 13-5 after a goal by Foote and two shots by Delaware to round out the scoring. Overall, the intensity remained for the bears throughout every minute of play as they proved they are a force to be reckoned with throughout the division.

The Blue Hens fall to 3-7 as they look to get a win against Hofstra Saturday at home.

The Bears advance to 7-1 and look to take down Bryant University in the teams' first-ever meeting Tuesday night on Bryant's turf at 7:00 p.m.

Brown 9, UMass 8

We win! It was a close match all the way through, although the Bears seemed in control for the majority of the time. I only got to listen, so I didn't see what was going on but I gathered some important stats and info from the broadcast. The biggest key to this game from what I could tell was possession. While I still think we could execute more quickly, the guys were smart with the ball and changed up the speed with some stalling and some quick 1v1s.

The Bears were in the lead for most of the game and were tied at 6 in the third quarter. The Minutemen, who lost to Albany last week but beat Harvard, who beat Duke, now have their second loss in a row. And the Bears? They have their third WIN in a row and they move on to 4-1 for the season. This is big. Because I say so. And I think they would all agree with me.

Unfortunately for those listening to the radio broadcast, Reade has an awesome game which meant lots and lots of SEALigman comments (refer to previous post) but he was certainly a threat on the field today. We got some good face off possessions, we fired some good shots and ultimately, we scored more than they did...which is all that matters in the end.

As for the goalie duel. Jordan won...he ended with 20 saves and Doc ended with 14 I think. You should probably double check those stats, but that's what I gather. I think this is the last game I won't physically see which is good for me and this blog. K See Ya.

Alright, I know it's been a while, but I am back. I missed the last two games last weekend but they were both wins. Great weekend. I would take the time now to update, but everyone that reads this already knows what happened and I'm no longer writing this for a class.

Now, We're at UMass...again, personally, I am not. THEY are there and I am sitting in Jordan's room listening to the game on the radio. I just got back from vacation. If you want a PREVIEW of the team...you can look here.

We are up 2-1 right now. The Bears are seeming in control. They have had the ball for the majority of play so far, it's still the first quarter. The radio guys have been saying "SEALigman" for Reade, which is getting old. Hopefully they stop that soon. Jordan has some good saves so far as I can tell. Walsh got the first goal of the day. UMass answered soon after...apparently it hit off of Jordan in. But Muldoon answered quickly with another sniper, if you will.

OK OK OK... THIS GUY just scored the tie things up again just seconds into the second quarter.

Meet Evan Blum. He has no manners...scoring a goal on us.

Alright...I'll do a wrap-up at the end. But for now, I have to sit and listen. Another save and apparently "Sealigman" has the ball again. Williams and SEALigman are having a catch according to the radio.

And I quote from the beginning of the radio broadcast: "A face-off between two of the best goalies in the nation." Oh Please...you wish Doc.

One game at a time

The Bears play two games this weekend, but as the saying goes, let's take one day at a time. First up is Quinnipiac, who often goes under the radar. While they may not be the biggest threat of the season, the Bobcats did have a winning record in 2008 (8-5) and played well against seemingly stronger teams. However, this week they are coming off of a loss.

The Bears will go over a full scouting report tomorrow, a day before the game, but they already know that Quinnipiac runs a lot of motion in their offense. Without giving away the Bears' game plan, not that I even have that information, the focus for practices today and tomorrow are going to focus on covering cutters and being ready to slide at all times.

Aside from preparing for certain traits of Quinnipiac's system, I personally have a lot of thoughts about where the focus should go in terms of preparing for this game. Since I was benched in lacrosse after starting for an entire year (I'm not bitter), I spent a lot of time on the sidelines dissecting games. For Brown, I would focus on possession and execution. These may seem vague and I may sound like a jerk, but listen to my point. In order to possess the ball and maintain that possession, you need to be confident with it. You need to know that you can do something with it and you need to know that you can depend on your teammates to also.

Sure, winning face-offs helps, but you can't win all of them. It's about how you react to not winning the possession that really matters. And it's about how you react to turning the ball over that matters. Back each other up. When you have the ball, make a decision on what to do with it and commit to that decision. When your teammate has the ball, make sure you are in a position to either screen for him or catch a pass. Don't second-guess.

All in all, be confident. And remember, this is your enemy.

The Bears have always had a loyal following, but now, I think it's reached a new level. Over the past three years that I have watched Brown lacrosse games, fans have been present but never in this way. Every year though, the fan base grows and their method of supporting the team has come a long way from merely throwing a party in the parking lot while the Bears play a game. Now, Brown fans run back and forth across the bleachers cheering on the reigning Ivy League Champions with larger-than-life heads, which are essentially, portable versions of FatHeads.
